Fund helps struggling New Orleans family

This will be the second Christmas in Fort Worth for Jennifer and her two daughters, 7 and 13, since they evacuated New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Federal disaster aid pays her rent, but Jennifer has had trouble finding work, and her mother had a stroke this year.

Jennifer's 7-year-old wants to return to New Orleans, Jennifer said.

"She thinks it would be the same. She doesn't understand," Jennifer said. "My oldest doesn't want to go back no matter what."

Jennifer wrote to Goodfellows for help making Christmas brighter for her daughters.

The fund, operated continuously since 1912 by the Star-Telegram, provides holiday gifts for schoolchildren in Tarrant County. This year, thousands of underprivileged children will get a $30 gift card for J.C. Penney and a $15 card for Payless ShoeSource.

Jennifer said her mother is recovering. And, she said, the 7-year-old worries about Mom.

"She asked me why Santa doesn't bring Mom any presents," Jennifer said.
